Spanning more than 4,028 square miles (about 93 miles long and 76 miles wide at its extremities), the island of Hawai‘i is the largest and youngest of the Hawaiian Islands. While all of the other islands can easily fit within its borders, only about 14 percent of the overall population resides here. Miles of untouched land contribute to its natural beauty – it is a place of extremes – from volcanoes that occasionally ooze molten lava to those that periodically don snow on its peaks, from acres of green pasturelands to vast ebony lava deserts, from lush tropical rainforests to beaches. Hawai‘i Island is home to all but four of the world’s sub-climate zones*. This diversity, coupled with an appreciation of the history, culture, and sense of place of the island, create a rewarding experience for visitor and resident alike.

In 2018, the Island of Hawaiʻi Visitors Bureau (IHVB) and the County of Hawaiʻi partnered to launch the “Pono Pledge,” a program aimed at educating and encouraging residents and visitors to be safe, responsible and respectful to each other and the environment while enjoying the bounty of the island of Hawaiʻi. The video on the website’s home page (www.ponopledge.com) was awarded a 2022 Silver Telly Award. Please take a few minutes to enjoy the video, then sign and share the pledge.

The Island of Hawaiʻi Visitors Bureau (IHVB), with roots dating back to the 1980s, is an Island Chapter of the Hawaiʻi Visitors and Convention Bureau (HVCB). HVCB is contracted by the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority (HTA) for marketing management services in the continental U.S. The Island of Hawai‘i Visitors Bureau is grateful and proud to also support the work of HTA’s international marketing partners in Canada, China, Japan, South Korea, and Oceania (Australia and New Zealand).
